When to change a hot tub filter – and how often to clean it?

The question of when to change a hot tub filter arises for every hot tub owner. The answer depends largely on the type of filter. We explain the differences between cartridge filters and the EGO3 Filterball system – including specific replacement and cleaning intervals.

Cartridge filter: when to change it and how to clean it?

When dirt and discoloration become increasingly difficult to wash off, it is time to buy a new cartridge filter.

Cartridge filters must be completely replaced every 1–2 years.

Cartridge filters must be cleaned every 1–2 weeks.

Cleaning a cartridge filter – step by step

1. Remove the filter and rinse it roughly with a jet of water.
2. Place the filter in a bucket of water and filter cleaner. Without filter cleaner, oils and grease are not removed from the fine fabric, which shortens the filter’s service life.
3. After approx. 3–6 hours, remove it from the chemical bath and rinse it immediately with fresh water.
4. Rinse each pleat individually with a stronger jet of water.

Cleaning takes approx. 1 hour of actual working time and requires around 50 liters of water as well as filter cleaner (approx. 15 euros).

EGO3 hot tub filter: when to change it and how to clean it?

EGO3 filters are equipped with spherical filter material – the EGO3 Filterballs. Only these are cleaned and eventually replaced.

The EGO3 filter container never needs to be replaced – it is a reusable container.

EGO3 Filterballs should be cleaned every 8 weeks.

Cleaning the EGO3 filter – step by step

1. Remove the filter from the pool and open the lid.
2. Squeeze the Filterballs under running water – like a sponge.
3. Put the Filterballs back into the EGO3 container and put it back into operation.

Cleaning takes only 5–6 minutes, requires approx. 5 liters of water, and uses no chemicals at all.

Comparison: When to change a hot tub filter – cartridge filter vs. EGO3

Over a period of 10 years, cartridge filters must be replaced at least 5–10 times as often as EGO3 filters.

Cartridge filters must be cleaned 4–8 times as often as EGO3 filters.

Cleaning the cartridge filter takes 10 times as long as cleaning the EGO3 filter.

Cleaning the cartridge filter requires 10 times as much water.

The EGO3 filter also clearly comes out on top when it comes to chemicals.
